The game plots that Dr. Doom and masters of evil destroy the mega helicarrier of S. From the Stark Tower the superheroes plan and attack on the Masters of Evil. Altogether this game is a must play game for the Marvel fans. Luckily, two dozen or so heroes, including Spider-Man , Wolverine , Thor and Elektra just happen to have a window in their diaries, and with nothing better to do, decide to band together to thwart the Doc's dastardly plans.
What follows is a frenetic action-romp, with lashings of unadulterated violence and some threadbare RPG elements thrown in for good measure. Controlling four heroes at any one time, you're required to do little more than mash buttons and use your heroes' special abilities to bulldoze through seemingly endless droves of enemies and solve a few puzzles during the interludes.
Now, this should be the part where I degenerate into a rant about how consoley the whole thing feels, moan about how patronised you'll be by the simplistic upgrade system and lament at how repetitive the whole affair is.
However, if truth be told, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is an utter hoot. Each hero is sufficiently unique to guarantee lashings of destructive diversity, while the sheer assortment of the locations teeters on excellent. Boss battles are explosive, brutal encounters, while some perfectly cast actors bring each character to life with genuine aplomb.
If you leave your brain at the door, you just might find hours of mindless fun here. With all the attention the Marvel license has been getting in both movies and video games, there is a fear that it's getting watered down.
In addition, Marvel Ultimate Alliance is the third iteration in the X-Men Legends series again returning with a similar format, raising gameplay concerns of its own.
However, let me put most of the concerns aside as Marvel Ultimate Alliance side steps any possibility of that and further shows the depth of the Marvel license when used to it's fullest. The game spans over 5 Acts and has options for single player, offline co-op, online co-op, and online competitive. The game is extensive and has more then enough missions and unlockables to keep you playing for a very long time. The unlockable items include new playable characters, new costumes, production art, and more.
The sheer size of each Act is huge, with the first mission in the game running about 2 hours game time and each act is broken up into about 6 missions each.
If the pace of the game continues as it currently is the game should run around 60 hours of gameplay. Additionally, there are plenty of multiplayer options to keep players busy for a long time. Marvel Ultimate Alliance allows you to switch between over 20 superheroes to use in your party with up to 4 in your party at a time. As your heroes level up you gain points to spend in special abilities making them do more damage or last longer. Coins can also be spent to enhance a superhero's gear making them stronger.
Special items are dropped off every boss you defeat giving a special bonus to anyone who equips them, each one relative in some way to what powers the boss that was defeated had.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a fun and addictive action RPG that tries and succeeds in improving on the genre. For anyone that has played X-Men Legends or Baldur's Gate I highly recommend downloading this title as well as anyone that has ever fantasized about having super powers. Overall rating: 5.
